Steve came in--panting slightly--with the last of the grocery run. There had been a note on the calendar that helpfully told him that he and Tony were apparently hosting a cookout tonight (!) and between them, they had zero cooking skills.

...this would not change as they got older, no, but it came as more of a shock now. "Okay," he said. "I got hot dogs and buns and every kind of potato chip they had. That should be enough, right?"

Steve rolled his eyes. "And my asthma cigarettes."

Which would help with nothing!

"Your what?"

"Asthma cigarettes?" Steve said. "I smoke them and they help me to breathe. They're around here somewhere," he muttered, patting his pockets and frowning.

"That's not a real thing." It couldn't be a real thing, right?

"Of course it's a real thing," Steve said, frowning. "Ma got them from the hospital."

"No, those things give you cancer and stuff," Tony said, giving him such a frown.

"Like I'll live long enough to get cancer," Steve said a little wryly.

Tony made a distressed noise, yanking him into a kiss. "You are gonna be fine. I'm taking you to the hospital after this party."

"I'm not sick now," Steve huffed when he finally pulled back. "I've just not got what they call a hearty constitution."

"Let's keep it in the non-sick area," he huffed right on back.

"It's really swell that you think I can get there," Steve said with a tiny smile, "but I've got a list of things that go wrong with me longer than your arm."

"Well. I'll just see if I can get a degree in medicine stuff next!"

He'd be Doogie Howser. Don't think he wouldn't be.

Steve looked a little overwhelmed. A lot overwhelmed. "That's a lot of work to go to just for me."

Somewhere, Rhodey was thoroughly unsurprised that little Tony would offer this to someone who was nice to him.

"I can do it," Tony said stubbornly. "Undergrad stuff would be easy."

"Well, of course," Steve said, still sounding a little kerflummoxed. "You're brilliant. But you don't have to be a doctor! I've seen lots of them, and they all think it's kind of amazing I've gotten this far."

"I'll make it better than amazing," he insisted. "Promise."

Steve leaned in and gave him a soft kiss in thanks. "You are the most incredible person I've ever met."

Tony shrugged, but smiled to himself. "You're just saying that."

"I never just say anything," Steve said. "It's why I get punched a lot."

"Maybe that's why you're my boyfriend," Tony said. "We got that in common."

"You get punched a lot too?" Steve looked outraged. "Who? I'll go tell them to stop right now."

"I've got a smart mouth," Tony said, tugging on his noodley arm to go sit down. "No one here."

Other than that one angry girl who really had it out for him at paintball.

"Okay," Steve said, jaw still stuck out stubbornly. "Because I'd talk to 'em."

And that would end well.

Tony needed to protect this sweet child at all costs.

"I can't kiss you if you get a broken nose," he pointed out.

Steve grumbled a bit but finally agreed. "You could kiss me with a black eye?"
