Steve came in--panting slightly--with the last of the grocery run. There had been a note on the calendar that helpfully told him that he and Tony were apparently hosting a cookout tonight (!) and between them, they had zero cooking skills.

...this would not change as they got older, no, but it came as more of a shock now. "Okay," he said. "I got hot dogs and buns and every kind of potato chip they had. That should be enough, right?"

He was pocket sized! At another point in his life, Tony would be delighted to have a lap-sized Steve.

"You'll like him."

"Well, you've only had good things to say about him," Steve said, "so I hope so. When will he be able to call or show up?"

"He said he'd call after the weekend," Tony said brightly. Not knowing the gentle mockery he was in store for. "I think he's with his folks."

Because that's what made sense to Tony at least.

"That makes sense," Steve agreed. "They probably don't want him using up the line all the time."

Yes. The one phone line that they shared. Clearly.

You know what, that still sort of tracked for where Tony thought phones were at.

Meanwhile, Rhodey was just sighing into his cellphone.

"He's got a sister," Tony said like that explained why Rhodey couldn't stay on the line with him constantly.

Steve nodded sagely. "She's probably listening in on the neighbors," he said. "One of our neighbors had her phone installed in the kitchen so she could stir dinner and listen to the gossip."

"Sure," Steve said. "The line's shared through the whole building."

"I mean, if you splice into the phone lines," Tony muttered, thinking it over.

"Splice?" Steve repeated, confused.

"You know, like, cut into the phone line." No, Steve probably didn't know.

"Don't cut the phone line!" Steve said, sounding aghast. "The Heenan boys did that by accident and they got such a hiding for it."

"I can fix it easy," Tony replied like it wasn't even a thing.

"Just don't get caught, right?" Steve teased.

"Never," Tony replied with a grin.

He got caught a lot, don't let him fool you, Steve.

Steve gave him a fond look. "Never? Really? Never?"

"Mostly never." So not at all.

[heroic_jawline]

Steve's lips quirked up. "Mostly never? You sound like Bucky. When he gets caught."

"Does that happen a lot?" If not, then Tony would accept that comparison.

"At least twice," Steve said.

[imafuturist]

"Then that is the number of times I've been caught." Tony, no.

[heroic_jawline]

Steve laughed. "Because you're so very smart," he teased.

"Exactly!" Steve, you totally understood him.

[heroic_jawline]

Steve kissed his nose. "You are amazing."

"Likewise," Tony said, looking so, so pleased by that.
