Steve came in--panting slightly--with the last of the grocery run. There had been a note on the calendar that helpfully told him that he and Tony were apparently hosting a cookout tonight (!) and between them, they had zero cooking skills.

...this would not change as they got older, no, but it came as more of a shock now. "Okay," he said. "I got hot dogs and buns and every kind of potato chip they had. That should be enough, right?"

"Sure," Steve said. "The line's shared through the whole building."

"I mean, if you splice into the phone lines," Tony muttered, thinking it over.

"Splice?" Steve repeated, confused.

"You know, like, cut into the phone line." No, Steve probably didn't know.

"Don't cut the phone line!" Steve said, sounding aghast. "The Heenan boys did that by accident and they got such a hiding for it."

"I can fix it easy," Tony replied like it wasn't even a thing.

"Just don't get caught, right?" Steve teased.

"Never," Tony replied with a grin.

He got caught a lot, don't let him fool you, Steve.

Steve gave him a fond look. "Never? Really? Never?"

"Mostly never." So not at all.

Steve's lips quirked up. "Mostly never? You sound like Bucky. When he gets caught."

"Does that happen a lot?" If not, then Tony would accept that comparison.

"At least twice," Steve said.

"Then that is the number of times I've been caught." Tony, no.

Steve laughed. "Because you're so very smart," he teased.

"Exactly!" Steve, you totally understood him.

Steve kissed his nose. "You are amazing."

"Likewise," Tony said, looking so, so pleased by that.

Steve beamed back. "Guess we should get ready for the guests," he said, finally.

While kind of hoping no one would come.

"Hiding in the bedroom is always an option," Tony reminded him. Now that they were clear on not using the bedroom for other things.

"We can bring snacks," Steve decided.

He was a growing boy! He hoped!

"Hide some snacks in there while I get the grill going," Tony said with a little squeeze at Steve's hips.

"And more of the celery soda," Steve said.

No one was going to fight you for that one, Steve. No one.
