Steve came in--panting slightly--with the last of the grocery run. There had been a note on the calendar that helpfully told him that he and Tony were apparently hosting a cookout tonight (!) and between them, they had zero cooking skills.

...this would not change as they got older, no, but it came as more of a shock now. "Okay," he said. "I got hot dogs and buns and every kind of potato chip they had. That should be enough, right?"

"Do you wanna?" Tony asked, all quiet anxiety hidden behind a lot of bluster.

Steve was honest--it was what got him in trouble most of the time. "I don't know. I mean, we woke up--" flailing hands, "--but I don't remember how we ended up that way!"

He bit his lip. "But you are so incredibly smart, and handsome, and I like kissing you?"

Tony swallowed back a little bit of panic at jumping into that sort if thing so quickly. And then again at the thought of disappointing Steve with being a prude or whatever when this was probably expected.

"I could," he said quickly. "If you want."

Steve reached out for Tony's hand, kind of clinging to it. "I'm not sure," he blurted. "Is that okay?"

"O--okay," Tony said, still a little lot anxious about this. Because he had to know what he did wrong here. He had to know.

"You don't seem that okay," Steve said, looking worried.

"I don't want you to think I'm a cocktease or whatever," he said all in one quick go. "Because I'm not. I'm not."

And Steve was really nice and even Rhodey approved of him and Tony didn't want him to leave.

You know, the fact that Rhodey approved should have let him know this wasn't necessary.

"I don't think that at all," Steve said earnestly.

"You'll still stick around?" Tony asked, biting his lip in the face of all that earnestness.

[heroic_jawline]

"Idiot," Steve said fondly, taking Tony's face between his hands and kissing him. "Of course I will."

"Good," Tony said, trying not to sound as relieved as he felt. He grinned and kissed Steve again. "Awesome."

"I don't want to do anything we're both not okay with," Steve said. "And right now that's...kissing and no funny stuff."

Be more 1930's, Steve, please.

"Funny stuff?" You had to know he'd pick that to be amused by, Steve. You had to know.

Steve blushed. "You know what I mean."

Tony grinned, nose wrinkling up in delight at how Steve reacted. You know, now that he wasn't in a panic anymore.

"I guess I do."

"Good, because it's not polite to get specific," Steve declared.

"Sharing is also caring." Tony, no.

[heroic_jawline]

"No," Steve said, turning crimson.

"I'm teasing," Tony said, leaning into him. Not too much because they didn't need to fall over right now.

"I knew that," Steve said after a beat that told Tony he absolutely hadn't known that.

"I like you, Steve," Tony said, sticking close because he was a clingy little barnacle.

"I like you too," Steve said, cheeks pink. "A lot."

"Good," Tony said, kissing him on the cheek.

That was a normal response, right? Oh god, it was the blind leading the blind.

They really were just extremely terrible at this.

Steve kept squeezing his hand, trying come up with something useful to say.

Judging by the awkward silence that was starting to stretch, he didn't come up with anything.

"Wanna get me a drink while I start the grill?" he asked.
