Steve came in--panting slightly--with the last of the grocery run. There had been a note on the calendar that helpfully told him that he and Tony were apparently hosting a cookout tonight (!) and between them, they had zero cooking skills.

...this would not change as they got older, no, but it came as more of a shock now. "Okay," he said. "I got hot dogs and buns and every kind of potato chip they had. That should be enough, right?"

"I knew that," Steve said after a beat that told Tony he absolutely hadn't known that.

"I like you, Steve," Tony said, sticking close because he was a clingy little barnacle.

"I like you too," Steve said, cheeks pink. "A lot."

"Good," Tony said, kissing him on the cheek.

That was a normal response, right? Oh god, it was the blind leading the blind.

They really were just extremely terrible at this.

Steve kept squeezing his hand, trying come up with something useful to say.

Judging by the awkward silence that was starting to stretch, he didn't come up with anything.

"Wanna get me a drink while I start the grill?" he asked.

"Sure!" Steve said, incredibly eager to help. "Soda?"

You were getting celery soda, Tony. Fair warning.

"...we have beer too." HE'D SEEN THE SODA YOU BOUGHT, OLD MAN.

Steve's eyebrows drew together. "How'd you get beer?" he asked, frowning.

"They delivered a keg." Mysteriously. He wasn't gonna question it.

"But we're not old enought!"

Oh, Steven.

"Someone else must have ordered it," Tony replied. "And it'd be, like, rude to let it go to waste."

Right? That was the logic he was going with.

Steven wrinkled up his nose. "But we're not old enough."

"I had my first drink when I was, like, six." Tony... Tony, why are you like this?

Steve looked a little flummoxed. "For a toothache or somethin?"

"A toothache?" No, Steve. No, it was not for a toothache.

"That's when my ma breaks out the whiskey," Steve said.

"Then I guess my dad must have a lot of them," Tony muttered, going to get the grill started. "Soda's fine."

Steve's ears weren't nearly as sharp as they would become, but he recognized that expression from some of the guys in the neighborhood with dads who were out to all hours. He looked sympathetic, kicking Tony's foot lightly with his. "At least for now?" he wheedled. "C'mon, I got all kinds of weird stuff. Got something that's bright green and looks like it'll glow in the dark, but the guy behind the counter thought that celery soda was odd."

"It is weird," Tony informed him, clearing his throat to get rid of all that nasty emotional shit. "Celery shouldn't be in soda."

"Have you ever tried it?" Steve asked.

Probably not because Tony was not 80.

"It's celery." That'd be a no.

"It's delicious!"

That was debatable.

"Is it?"

Yeah, he agreed with the narrative.

"I like it," Steve said, nodding.
