Kitty & Clint's Living Room, Sunday morning

After spending exactly as long as could be considered polite at Annie and Deigo's wedding (and leaving a blender), Steve made his way to Clint and Kitty's house, took an extremely hot shower (sorry, Clint and Kitty's water bill) and passed out on the sofa.

He hadn't had a proper night's sleep in probably two weeks.

Steve wrapped his arms around himself and nodded. "I still don't think I was wrong about the Accords. Every oversight we've had--SHIELD, the World Security Council--have been corrupt. The United Nations is even more unwieldy."

"As someone who has a very good reason to not be monitored, I agree with you," she said. "For what it's worth."

"Thanks," Steve said quietly. "I'm feeling pretty out there on this limb by myself."

"You're not," she assured him.

"We've made some very public mistakes," Steve said, quoting Natasha, "but I don't think government intervention would make that better."

"Things tend to get dicey when they get involved. If there aren't restrictions now, there will be. If you're not being used strategically by them now, you will be. And then you get into the fact that you can't be the only powered people in the world and if this doesn't affect them yet, it will..." Kitty let out a sigh. "Feels a lot like a slippery slope."

Steve nodded hard. "Exactly. We learned last week that the king of Wakanda dresses like a cat and fights crime--where would he fall under the Accords?"

"So you got to T'challa," Kitty nodded. "He's probably a gray area. And lord forbid they find people who have powers they were born with."

She didn't know how Wanda got her powers there aside from there not being mutants. But under the Accords, Lexi could be due for some serious overreach someday.

Steve nodded again. "Exactly. It just feels like a play on people's fear of the unknown and the powerful and a huge chunk of Tony's guilt about Ultron."

"I'm glad that at the very least you stood up against it," she told him.

Steve smiled softly. "I had to."

Tony, when he could talk, would have a very different take on this.
