Apartment Above Stark Industries, Tuesday Night

The visit to Peggy had been--

Well. Awful.

And while the people at the facility would never dream of telling Steve not to keep coming, he was getting the impression that they wished they could. He'd gone for a long walk afterwards, seeing the entire Mall and spending far too much time in front of the World War II Memorial even though it was freezing outside before picking up cupcakes in Georgetown so Tony wouldn't worry about why Steve was running a little late today.

He opened the door to the apartment, holding the box of treats out of the reach of a joyful corgi who was convinced each time Steve left that he would Never Be Seen Again, and called out, "Tony? Where are you?"

"Here," Tony said, following the frantic clatter of dog paws on the flooring to where Steve was. He perked up upon seeing the cupcakes. "Traffic out of the city that bad?"

He was giving Steve the out on his, we'll, pretty late return because it kept his brain from going into overtime on other possibilities. Most involved HYDRA or Barnes.

"It was nuts," Steve said with a tiny smile. "How can so many people be that bad at merging?"

Oh, that wasn't a good smile at all.

Tony smiled back at him anyway, reaching up to cup his cheek for a kiss. "There's takeout in the fridge for dinner."

Steve lingered in the kiss for a moment, keeping it sweet and soft. "What kind of takeout?"

"Thai," Tony said, letting his hand trail away from Steve's cheek as he pulled away. "I finished the pad thai, but there's plenty of other things in there."

"Chicken satay?" Steve asked hopefully, glancing towards the kitchen.

"J ordered, so probably," Tony said, taking the cupcakes box from him to bring over to the counter and out of Patriot's reach.

"Thank you, JARVIS," Steve said to the ceiling, rummaging through the fridge and making pleased noises when he found satay and spicy soup.

And far too much rice. Just way too much rice in there.

"Early Valentine's Day gifts?" Tony ventured, snagging one that looked like so, so much chocolate.

"Yes," Steve said, smiling. "I was in the neighborhood and thought you'd like them."

"I very much like them," Tony agreed, relaxing at the little gesture. Also, delicious, delicious chocolate.

"I'm not keeping it up for the entire month, though," Steve said, resting his food on the counter so he could give Tony another kiss.

"Oh, don't worry. I'll pick up the slack," Tony assured him.

Which wouldn't turn into a thing at all.

It was all fun and games until there was a story-tall stuffed rabbit with arms that kinda looked like boobs.

"I already have everything I need," Steve said. "You, and Thai take out."

No, no. This time it would be a giant love monkey. Totally different.

"I'll be sure to keep them on speed dial then," Tony replied around a bite of cupcake.
