Tony & Steve's apartment in the Stark Tiny Tower, Wednesday mid-morning

Steve and Tony had returned from Steve's dimension at an ungodly time that morning and had almost immediately collapsed into bed. (Patriot had been ecstatic to see them home and so Steve'd had to take him for a long walk to get those wiggles out. At three in the morning. Patriot owed him. So did Tony.) Steve had, for once, forgone his pre-dawn run and was still in bed as the clock's numbers read 10:00.

He finally opened his eyes with a tiny groan. His stomach let out a much less tiny rumble in reply. Time to get up.

"Is he like that in every universe?" Steve asked.

"So far, yes," Tony replied with a sigh. "Maybe there's another one out there where he's not?"

"That's very irritating," Steve admitted.

Tony kissed him on the shoulder. "You'd like everyone to be straight forward."

"It makes everything a lot easier," Steve said, smiling.

"Yes, but people aren't always that easy," Tony replied. "Nice as it might be."

Possibly the reason why Tony built robots and AIs.

Steve sighed. "I know. Just... wishing."

Tony kissed him again for that. "I've got you."

“I don’t deserve you sometimes,” Steve murmured, kissing Tony softly.

"We both need someone to have our backs," Tony murmured.

[heroic_jawline]

“I try my best, both for you and for him,” Steve said. “Admittedly, for different reasons.”

But that wounded look in either pair of eyes hit him in the gut the same way.

"I should hope so," Tony replied with a little laugh. "Only one of us gets to be here."

"And that's you, not that I think you worry," Steve said with a quick kiss.

"Me? Never." Always and forever about everything.
