Super Convenient Empty Warehouse, Berlin, Germany [Tuesday later evening, NFB]
While Sam went off to make a mysterious phone call, Steve unclamped Bucky from the vise--getting a tired smile and an eyebrow arch for his trouble--and then handed him the extra doner kebab Sam had brought. "Guessing you're hungry," he murmured. "I'll be back in a second. Don't go anywhere."
Then he pulled his phone out and texted Wanda up at the compound and Clint...wherever Clint went...and scrolled through his contacts for other people that might help. "Wanda (FH)" would get confusing with the other Wanda who was already coming. He wasn't entirely sure how much being tiny would help against an unknown amount of Buckys, so he moved past Scott for the moment, figuring he'd go back if he needed to. He mentally sorted through the people in his heroes class. Jane would also be a lot to explain in a short amount of time, and they needed to be stealthy on this op. It felt like Thors were not naturally stealthy. He didn't know the others well enough to ask them to face off against super soldiers help but Kitty...Kitty he knew.
He pulled her phone number up "Kitty (BAR)" and texted a quick: You busy?
There, super casual!

throughaphase and
so_hawkward for turning Steve down flat! I continue in my quest to make this movie make sense.]

There, super casual!
Kitty | Super casual! Not at the moment, subject to change. What's up? |
Steve | Want to come help potentially fight some super soldiers? Bucky says they made a few extras and a bad guy (of course) has found out. There! Very upfront aside from not mentioning who else would be helping! |
Kitty | Are you asking Clint? Ah, the joys of superheroed parenting. Having to make sure someone was around for the kid. |
Steve | I didn't want to ask both of you! Because childcare. |
Kitty | Can I call you? |
Steve | Sure. Can't guarantee the reception--in a warehouse. |
Kitty | Kitty frowned. And then called. |
Steve | Steve picked up on the first ring. "Rogers." |
Kitty | "So what would I be walking into here?" she asked. Also hello. |
Steve | It was Steve, so he had to be truthful. "A mess," he said with a sigh. "Does your reality have something called the Accords?" |
Kitty | "We do not," she said. "What is it?" |
Steve | "Oversight of the Avengers by the United Nations," Steve said, "though they're also throwing in everyone else with powers that they may or may not know about." |
Kitty | "Okay." Sounded like something she'd have an issue with as a mutant, yes. "Who's all going?" |
Steve | That might've been bad reception or an awkward pause for a moment. "Well, me, obviously. Bucky. Sam Wilson. Wanda's trying." Not Tony. |
Kitty | That got a frown out of her. "That's it? Why?" |
Steve | "Tony signed the Accords," Steve said, "so the Avengers...fractured. A bit." |
Kitty | Oh, Kitty could see where this was headed. "And what's his side doing right now?" |
Steve | "Probably trying to find me," Steve admitted. "Or Bucky." |
Kitty | "I don't think I can be involved in this, Steve," she said. |
Steve | Steve let out a long sigh. "Yeah?" |
Kitty | "I've done this before," Kitty said. "Or rather, I didn't, because it was all two sides trying their hardest to destroy each other while I had to keep everything running on my own and take care of the collateral damage. Because that's what happens." |
Steve | "I don't want to destroy anyone!" Steve protested. "I just don't want them to kill my friend." |
Kitty | She was at least going to feel like the worst now. But she really did know how this went, and the conflict in her situation hadn't been much different. "I'm sorry, Steve. I wish I could, but I can't." |
Steve | "I understand," Steve said in a smaller voice than he intended. "Suppose this goes for Clint, too?" |
Kitty | "I'm not his boss," she said. "But he'd get my opinion." And it'd be interesting in that household if he said yes, considering he'd seen her deal with that at the time. |
Steve | Steve had been married long enough to know how this was going to go for him. "Okay," he said. "Thanks for listening, Kitty." |
Kitty | "I'm sorry," she said, sincerely. "Good luck." |
Steve | Well, his chat with Kitty had not been what could be considered a roaring success, but Steve was practically in the dictionary under the word stubborn, so here he was. Calling Kitty's husband. |
FH!Clint | While Clint was grateful for the distraction from watching yet another episode of Bluey with Lexi, he was still a little concerned to see Steve's number come up. "Hey Cap, is everything okay?" |
Steve | "Not exactly," Steve said, sounding exhausted. "There's good news and bad news." |
FH!Clint | "Bad news first. No need to sugarcoat anything," Clint said. Maybe it would be something only mildly bad? |
Steve | "Bad news is that Bucky isn't the only Winter Soldier." So. Not exactly mildly bad. |
FH!Clint | "Sounds like Nat and the Black Widows. These guys always make more than one experiment," Clint said with a sigh. "Is the good news you know what to do about that? |
Steve | "Not exactly," Steve hedged, "but Bucky's resurfaced too, and he knows where they're being kept." In exotic Siberia! |
FH!Clint | "That does sound like great news." It was also, however, news that probably didn't need to come over the phone, and he was a little worried about the purpose of this call. "Do you need any intel I can look up?" |
Steve | "I was wondering if you wanted to come out and help," Steve said. |
FH!Clint | "Is this the thing you already asked Kitty to help with?" He was pretty sure he already knew the answer, but he could hope he was wrong. |
Steve | "Yes," Steve said because he was honest. Then he braced for the no. |
FH!Clint | "I wish I could say yes, I really do." It wasn't a lie, as much as it sounded like a cop-out. "And I hope this goes better for you than what Kitty described. But I've got to put her and Lexi first, and if things go sideways..." At least one version of him was going to make a smart decision here. |
Steve | Steve let out a soft sigh. "Yeah," he said, trying--and failing--to hide his disappointment. "I get it." |
FH!Clint | Ugh, disappointment from Steve was worse than getting yelled at. "I'm sorry, Cap. Next time, give me a call first," he said, only partly joking. "Kitty will forgive me a lot easier that way." |
Steve | Steve chuckled softly. "Noted. See you soon, Clint." Well. Hopefully. |
